Occasionally you may need to be a little more subtle with your senior loved one, especially if they’re not willing to give up something that’s becoming dangerous for them. Driving can be one of those situations.

Best Ways to Naturally Help Seniors Drive Less

Finding ways to make it easier for your loved one to avoid driving can help your loved one naturally drive less.

1. Bring Social Visits to Your Loved One

One of the reasons that your loved ones may feel that they still need to drive is they have social interests and obligations.

If more of those social visits were to happen at your loved one’s home, however, they would have less need to drive to them.

Find ways to bring those social engagements to your senior loved one.

2. Look into Delivery for Local Errands

Many local companies are quite happy to deliver to elderly loved ones when necessary.

Contact local companies with whom your loved one does business and find out if they offer home delivery services.

Some other local businesses that are more service-based may also perform house calls of a sort for your loved one.

A barber, for example, might be willing to come to your loved one’s home.

3. Tackle Errands for Your Loved One

If you can handle some of your loved one’s errands, that can also cut down on their need to drive.

You may not be able to manage all of your loved one’s errands on your own, though, and that’s fine. Talk to your loved one’s other family members about pitching in to break up some of his errands amongst several different people.

4. Work with Other Family Members to Keep Someone Available to Drive

Another idea that can work well for your loved one is to have other family members, or even senior care providers, on hand during the day for your loved one.

Then, when they need to go somewhere, the family member or senior care provider can offer to do the driving.

When family members aren’t available, consider asking friends and neighbors if they can be on call for this kind of help, too.

Contact Care Options for Kids for Home Health Care Services

Having senior care providers available can also help your loved one feel more receptive to the idea of allowing someone else to drive for them.
